SUNDANCE AUDIENCE AWARD WINNER “SENNA” GETS U.S. RELEASE ON AUGUST 12TH
PDA will release the Working Title Production

New York. April 28th, 2011 On the heels of their successful release of Banksy’s EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP which also earned an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary, John Sloss and Bart Walker’s Producers Distribution Agency (PDA) will release Working Title’s SENNA on August 12th. PDA regulars Richard Abramowitz and Electric Artists’ Marc Schiller will reprise their roles for the release.

SENNA made its North American Premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, receiving strong critical praise and winning the coveted Audience Award. Writing about the film from Sundance, Kenneth Turan, chief film critic of the Los Angeles Times wrote: “Sometimes a documentary will unexpectedly reach out and grab you by the throat, not giving you a second to breathe. That’s that way it was with SENNA…such is the power of this man, and this film”.

SENNA, directed by Asif Kapadia (The Warrior) is the epic story of Ayrton Senna, considered to be one of the greatest race-car drivers in the history of Formula One. An inspiring and thrilling film about the commitment and sacrifice it takes to be the best in the world at what you do, SENNA is an extraordinary narrative told in a remarkable manner, using astounding footage to create a thrill ride worthy of its daring subject.

PDA’s John Sloss comments, “Occasionally a film comes along which defies all preconceptions, and simply demands to be seen. SENNA is an unexpectedly moving and powerful film that we believe has immense playability far beyond its obvious core audience, and we all feel strongly that this is exactly the type of film will benefit from our unique approach to distribution.

“Working Title’s Eric Fellner comments, “We are pleased to be working with PDA to bring SENNA to audiences in the U.S. The response to the film has been tremendous so far and we are confident that we have chosen a strong partner in PDA to customize a release plan for us that will maximize its distribution potential in the states.”

A PDA release, SENNA is A Working Title Production in association with Midfield Films. The film is directed by Asif Kapadia, written by Manish Pandey and produced by James Gay Rees, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. The executive producers are Kevin Macdonald, Manish Pandey, Debra Hayward and Liza Chasin.

SONY PICTURES CLASSICS DISCOVERS HIGHER GROUND

NEW YORK, NY (February 14, 2011) – Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired the rights in North America, Australia and New Zealand to Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut, HIGHER GROUND. Academy Award® nominee Vera Farmiga also stars in the film, alongside Academy Award® nominee John Hawkes, Donna Murphy, and Joshua Leonard. Carolyn S. Briggs and Tim Metcalfe penned the script based on Briggs’ memoir “This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost.” HIGHER GROUND was in US dramatic competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

HIGHER GROUND is a Strategic Motion Ventures presentation of a BCDF Pictures Production in association with Authentic Management Projects, The Group Entertainment, and Ruminant Films. The film is produced by Claude Dal Farra, Renn Hawkey, Carly Hugo, Jon Rubinstein and Matt Parker under Dal Farra’s BCDF Pictures banner. BCDF’s Lauren Munsch and Brice Dal Farra, and Jonathan Burkhart executive produced. CAA brokered the deal with Sony Pictures Classics.

Spanning the 60s through the 80s, HIGHER GROUND expertly depicts the landscape of a tight-knit spiritual community. Inspired by the resonant memoir written by Carolyn Briggs (who also co-wrote the screenplay), This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost, the film is a study of one woman’s internal struggle with the primary love relationships in her life. As a contemplative child, Corrine (Farmiga) longs for stability and a sense of belonging. Her parents’ marriage disintegrates when Corrine is fifteen, so she searches for security in Ethan (Leonard), a talented musician. After a shotgun wedding and a terrifying brush with death, the couple dedicates their lives to God and joins a small hippie church. Corrine and Ethan find strength and joy in this community, though some of the tenets leave Corrine unsettled. The results provoke her to begin asking questions and inspire her to finally claim her own voice.

“HIGHER GROUND is one of these rare independent films — perfectly crafted, honest and inspiring. Vera Farmiga not only delivers a great performance but her debut as a filmmaker is one of the most auspicious in years. We feel this film will catch fire with audiences the way it has with us,” states Sony Pictures Classics.

In a joint statement, BCDF Pictures said, “We couldn’t be happier that Vera’s film will be distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. We are pleased to be in business with Michael Barker, Tom Bernard, and Dylan Leiner. Their skill, knowledge, and passion for independent film will be a great asset in bringing a very special movie, HIGHER GROUND to large audiences across the country.”

Magnolia Pictures Acquires North American Rights to Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood’s MAGIC TRIP

Berlin – February 14, 2011 – The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures announced today they have acquired North American rights to Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood’s MAGIC TRIP, a freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. Co-directed and co-written by Oscar winner Gibney and his frequent collaborator Ellwood, the film was produced under HISTORY’s feature documentary banner, HISTORY Films, and the network will follow the film’s theatrical and home video release by Magnolia with a television broadcast premiere. Gibney produced along with Will Clarke, founder of Optimum Releasing, and Alexandra Johnes, another frequent Gibney collaborator.

In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World’s Fair. He was joined by “The Merry Band of Pranksters,” a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac’s “On the Road,” and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen. With MAGIC TRIP, Gibney and Ellwood were given unprecedented access to this raw footage by the Kesey family. They worked with the Film Foundation, HISTORY and the UCLA Film Archives to restore over 100 hours of film and audiotape, and have shaped an invaluable document of this extraordinary piece of American history.

Magnolia will release the film this summer as part of its Ultra VOD program, premiering the film on VOD platforms a month prior to its theatrical release—a model that proved very successful last year for another Magnolia/Gibney collaboration, Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer. MAGIC TRIP will mark the sixth collaboration between Gibney and Magnolia, who distributed three of the prolific filmmaker’s projects in 2010 alone: Client 9, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, and the Freakonomics omnibus, featuring a segment by Gibney.

“Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood have done a masterful job piecing together this incredibly amazing footage,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “It is truly like a taking a trip in a time machine back to the cultural beginning of the sixties.”

“I’m delighted to tune in and turn on with Magnolia and MAGIC TRIP,” said director Gibney. “Magnolia has the mind-expanded consciousness to be able to make the most out of this film. We’re on the bus. Further!”

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn with Cinetic’s John Sloss.

About Magnolia Pictures
Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga’s hotly anticipated directorial debut, Higher Ground, is an incredible achievement for a first-time director while directing herself as the lead. This is a coming of age drama in which Farmiga delivers a subtle, nuanced performance completely from the gut with equally strong and compelling supporting characters. Set against the landscape of the Sixties when feminism reached its zenith, the film expertly depicts the landscape of a tight knit spiritual community. Inspired by the resonant memoir written by Carolyn Briggs (who also wrote the screenplay), the film is an exquisite study of one woman’s internal struggle with the primary love relationships in her life. The casting was done by Paul Schnee and Kerry Barden, who also cast last year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone. John Hawkes, Donna Murphy, Bill Irwin, Dagmara Dominczyk and Joshua Leonard round out the cast as well as Vera’s younger sister Taissa Farmiga, who proves herself to be an extraordinary new talent as young Corinne.
Directed by Eugene Jarecki
Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner, and acclaimed author and expert on the Military Industrial Complex, Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight) couldn’t be coming out with a film on a timelier subject than Reagan on the eve of his Centenary in February. Especially as we examine the times we’re living through now and how we got here, this doc is a textured and honest look at the life and career of one of the most influential Presidents in our history. Rather than oversimplifying his massive, larger than life legacy, Jarecki strikes at the heart of the story and presents a clear-eyed look at the man and the myth.

MAGIC TRIP
Directed by Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood
What would Sundance be without a film from two time Academy Award nominee and Academy Award winner Alex Gibney, whom Esquire called the most important documentary filmmaker of our time? Previously we brought the Festival Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and Casino Jack and the United States of Money. Once more, he unveils something completely different, entertaining, and utterly fascinating with the story of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters in Magic Trip. This time, Gibney along with co-director Alison Ellwood has uncovered a vast treasure trove of archival footage, photos and audio recordings to create an immersion experience of Kesey’s acid-fueled cross-country road trip in 1964 to the New York World’s Fair. The meticulous restoration of the never-before-seen-and-heard footage and audiotapes was undertaken by the UCLA Film & Television Archive with funding from The Film Foundation (Martin Scorsese’s film preservation foundation) and The History Channel, with Imaginary Forces providing the super-psychedelic graphics.

MY TRIP TO AL-QAEDA
86 min | Feature Documentary
Executive Producer: Patricia Barnes Matthews, Dana O’Keefe

Program Notes
Academy Award® winner Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) collaborates with Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright to bring Wright’s titular one-man play to the screen. Wright made waves in 2006 with his best-selling book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, chronicling fundamentalist Islam’s rise to power, and the roots of modern religious extremism and terrorism.

In contemplating how to adapt his book for the stage, Wright ultimately chose to refocus on his own experience researching and writing the book, and his struggle to maintain objectivity as a journalist investigating Islamic terror. The resulting work is less a literal adaptation and more a personal, emotional complement piece to the objectivity of his nonfiction book. It debuted to rave reviews in March 2007. With Gibney’s documentary on the performance, the layers of adaptation are taken a step further. Channeling equal parts Spalding Gray and An Inconvenient Truth, Gibney captures both the emotional power and political implication of Wright’s work in a distinctly cinematic way, making My Trip to Al-Qaeda a riveting travelogue/performance piece.

Program Notes
What is “gerrymandering“? You don’t have to wait for your oversized 2010 census envelope to figure out what exactly it means. Named for the Massachusetts governor who conveniently redrew a few erratic lines in 1812, gerrymandering is the redistricting of electoral boundaries to effect voting outcome in favor of a particular candidate, political party, et cetera. And why should you care? As the governor of California will tell you, the reestablishment of district lines takes away the voice of individual communities, reduces voter turnout and lessens competition among candidates. Whether it’s a community, race, or party issue, an issue it surely is.

Director Jeff Reichert gathers an impressive bevy of experts to smartly present a well-rounded exposé. From California’s struggle to pass Prop 11 to The Daily Show‘s mockery of a gaggle of border-jumping Texas politicians, this accessible and informative documentary encourages us to put on our bifocals and more closely inspect the warp and woof of America’s democratic system.

New York – April 5, 2010 – The Wagner/Cuban Companies’ Magnolia Pictures announced today that it has acquired all North American rights to FREAKONOMICS, the highly anticipated film version of the phenomenally bestselling book about incentives-based thinking by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. Like the book, the film examines human behavior with provocative and sometimes hilarious case studies, bringing together a dream team of filmmakers responsible for some of the most acclaimed and entertaining documentaries in recent years: Academy Award® winner Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Casino Jack and the United States of Money), Academy Award® nominees Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing (Jesus Camp), Academy Award® nominee Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me), Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight) and Seth Gordon (The King of Kong).

Produced by Chad Troutwine, with Chris Romano and Dan O’Meara of the Green Film Company, FREAKONOMICS is the Closing Night Gala film selection at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Alex Gibney takes a visually arresting look at the crumbling façade of Sumo wrestling and exposes searing and violent truths about this ancient and revered sport. Morgan Spurlock offers up a buoyant and revealing angle on the repercussions of baby names. Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing balance levity and candor with an eye-opening profile of underachieving kids incentivized to learn with cold hard cash. Finally, Eugene Jarecki investigates an unsettling theory to explain why crime rates dramatically dropped in the early ’90s. Seth Gordon weaves the pieces together with brisk interludes, providing context and commentary from the authors.

Magnolia anticipates a particularly wide audience for this documentary, as it is difficult to overstate the impact of the source material. Upon its release, Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything spent multiple years on the New York Times bestsellers list, and became one of the most blogged about books in the world, inspiring a continuing discussion that has spawned a bestselling sequel (SuperFreakonomics), as well as a regular blog on the Times’ website.

“As huge fans of the book, the film version of FREAKONOMICS is something that we’ve been excited about ever since we caught wind of it,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “The fact that this dream project is being realized by the ‘dream team’ of documentary filmmakers makes this a major film event. We couldn’t be more thrilled.”

“Dan O’Meara, Chris Romano and I have long admired Magnolia’s maverick approach to the business and their pioneering success with new distribution models. FREAKONOMICS has been an audacious project from its inception, and we could not ask for a more intrepid partner to handle the release of our film than Magnolia Pictures,” said producer Chad Troutwine of Green Film Company.

Magnolia is planning a fall theatrical release for the film. The deal was negotiated by Magnolia SVP Tom Quinn with Troutwine, Romano and O’Meara.

About Magnolia Pictures

Upcoming releases include Luca Guadagnino’s I Am Love, Bob Pulcini and Shari Berman’s The Extra Man, Oscar-winner Alex Gibney’s Casino Jack and the United States of Money, Neil Jordan’s Ondine, Dagur Kari’s The Good Heart, the hard hitting nuclear weapons documentary Countdown to Zero, and many more.

About Green Film Company:
The company’s first project By The People: The Election of Barack Obama was co-produced with Edward Norton’s Class 5 Films, and picked up by HBO Documentary Films, BBC and Sony Pictures Worldwide. The company’s current projects Freakonomics and Gerrymandering will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival followed by their theatrical release during 2010.

For Immediate Release

Exit Through The Gift Shop
A Banksy film

US Release April 16, 2010

Running time: 87 minutes

Exit Through the Gift Shop is the first film by the renowned graffiti artist Banksy and made its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival on the 24th January 2010. Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the Palestinian segregation wall in the West Bank. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. Exit Through the Gift Shop is the story of how an eccentric French shop keeper and amateur film maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. Billed as ‘the world’s first street art disaster movie’ the film contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work.
.

“It’s the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed”. – Banksy

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP is one of those films that comes along once in a great while, a warped hybrid of reality and self -induced fiction while at the same time a totally entertaining experience. The story is so bizarre I began to question if it could even be real…but in the end I didn’t care. I feel bad I won’t be able to shake the filmmaker’s hand and tell him how much I love this film. I think I will shake everyone’s hand that day and hope I hit on Banksy somewhere. I love his work in all forms.
– John Cooper
Director, Sundance Film Festival
